Overview

Carolina Marin takes on Tai Tzu Ying in the Women's singles semi-final of 2016 Hong Kong Open Superseries in Kowloon on 26 November. The defending champion was at her brutal best against Japanese shuttler Akane Yamaguchi in their quarter-final clash on Friday. She just needed 38 minutes to clinch a 21-7, 21-18 win over her opponent, against whom she had lost the quarter-final of Denmark Open last month.

Marin looked dominant and never let Yamaguchi, who has been in a good run of form winning in Denmark and Korea earlier this year. The reigning Olympic champion conceded she faced a tough opponent and that she will be up against another on Saturday.

Notably, Marin went head-to-head in last week's China Open quarter-final against Ying and ended up on the losing side. However, she would not want to let go of a final opportunity to win her first Superseries title this year.

"It was a really tough one, but I gave a good performance today, and I'm happy with that. I don't want to think that I'm defending the title. I have to take it game by game," Marin said, as quoted by Badminton World Federation official website.

"Let's see what happens. It [semi-final] is gonna be a tough match.

Ying, since suffering a first-round exit against India's PV Sindhu at the Rio Games earlier this year, has been consistently reaching the final stages of the Superseries tournaments The Taiwanese shuttler came close winning a title in Denmark but lost the final to Yamaguchi.

Having already sealed a berth at the World Superseries Finals in Dubai, Ying would want to head into the year-ending tournament with a win under her belt.

However, she will be up against a confident looking Marin, who also holds a 4-2 head-to-head advantage over the Taiwanese shuttler.
