Overview
Malaysia take on Vietnam in their second Group B encounter of the AFF Suzuki Cup 2016 in Yangon on 23 November. The 2010 champions came back from behind to clinch a 3-2 win over group minnows Cambodia. Chan Vathanaka troubled the Tigers defence and scored a brace but captain Amri Yahyah's inspired performance in the second half helped his team snatch three crucial points in what could end up being their easiest clash in the group stages.
Malaysia have given themselves a good chance to seal their spot in the semi-final but the game against group favourites might not be the ideal clash to clinch three points. Ong Kim Swee's side is likely to park the bus for most of the game and look for opportunities to hit on the counter attack.
The onus will once again be on their skipper to do the trick upfront. Also centre-backs Shahrul Saad and Shahrom Kalam will have a huge role to play to contain the Vietnamese unit.
Coach Ong Kim Swee said his team is aware of the attacking exploits of an "improved and well balanced" Vietnam but maintained that his players are fit and raring to go.
"Definitely we need a better performance compared to what we did against Cambodia. On our part we will try to make it difficult for them and get a positive result." Kim Swee said, as quoted by the tournament's official website.
Nguyen Huu Thang's men, on the other hand, have won eight consecutive matches since their 1-0 loss to Iraq in the World Cup Qualifier earlier this year.
The Golden stars continued their form into the tournament and came up with a solid attacking display against co-hosts Myanmar in their opening encounter on Sunday.
Veteran attacker Le Cong Vinh proved his capabilities with a late winner and is expected to trouble Malaysia on Wednesday.
