Overview

Andy Murray takes on Milos Raonic in the first semi-final of the 2016 ATP World Tour Finals in London on 19 November. The world number one finished on top of the John McEnroe group after maintaining a perfect 3-0 record.

Enroute to the semi-final, Murray dropped only one set, against Kei Nishikori, and has decimated both Stan Wawrinka and Marin Cilic. He dispatched the third seed in just an hour and 26 minutes on Friday 6-4, 6-2 to assert his domination.

The Birt faces Raonic, against whom he has tasted a lot of success in the ongoing season. Murray has beaten his Canadian opponent seven times on the trot and five times in 2016.

Murray started the year by dispatching Raonic in the semi-final of the Australian Open in a five-setter and went on to beat him in the final of Wimbledon as well as at the Queen's Club.

Also, it was Raonic's withdrawal from the semi-final of the Paris Masters that fast tracked Murray's rise to the top of the ATP standings in October. Now it is the the fourth-ranked Canadian who stands in the way of the Brit's maiden final appearance.

Notably, Murray has to at least match whatever Novak Djokovic, who will face Kei Nishikori in the second semi-final later in the night on Saturday, achieves in the tournament to walk away with the year-ending number one position for the first time in his career.

While Murray's record in the last-four stages of the year-ending tournament has not been impressive (semi-final exits in 2010, 2012 and 2014) he would fancy himself to make it 6-0 this year against Ronic and reach his maiden ATP Finals title match.

On the other hand, Raonic, who was in doubt for the ongoing tournament after he suffered a leg injury in Paris last month, has bounced back well and has emerged second in the Ivan Lendl group.

The Canadian lost against Djokovic but managed to earn wins against Gael Monfils and Dominic Thiem. Raonic would want to prevail in the tournament and keep his hopes of finishing the year as world number three intact.
