Democratic presidential hopeful Bernie Sanders won the Michigan primary on Tuesday, dealing a shocking defeat to rival and frontrunner Hillary Clinton.
Clinton had a seemingly insurmountable 20-point lead going into the Michigan primary, according to Real Clear Politics polling average.
Sanders said his win in Michigan proved opinion polls and those who had written off his chances in the state wrong.
The acceptance for the message of political change he champions was "strong in every part of the country," he said.
"Frankly, we believe our strongest areas are yet to come," Sanders added.
However, Clinton increased her lead over Sanders in delegate count with her big victory in Mississippi.
On the Republican side, Donald Trump registered primary wins in Michigan and Mississippi on Tuesday.
The GOP outsider said his win showed it was time his party rivals ended their campaign and supported him to present a unified voice against the Democrats.
"I hope Republicans will embrace it. We have something going that is so good, we should grab each other and unify the party," Trump said.
