Overview

Thailand take on Indonesia in the 2016 AFF Suzuki Cup opener in Bulacan on 19 November.

The War Elephants head into the tournament as the clear favourites to retain the Suzuki Cup as they are the only team from the region to have qualified for the final stages of the 2018 Fifa World Cup Qualifier.

Kiatisuk Senamuang's side won the title in 2014 toppling Malaysia over a two-legged final. They head into the tournament days after they opened their account in the Asian leg of the World Cup qualifying group on Tuesday. Despite conceding an early goal at home against Asian Champions Australia, Senamuang's side came back from behind to snatch a 2-2 draw.

Striker Teerasil Danga and playmaker Chanathip Songkrasin came up with top efforts against the Socceroos, and are key to the defending champions' plans in the coming weeks. Charyl Chappuis, who was the team's highest-scorer in the last edition, is looking good to make an impact as well.

Centre-backs Tanaboon Kesarat and Koravit Namwiset will be expecting less pressure on them after a arduous World Cup qualifying campaign in which the Thais have conceded 12 goals so far.

"Every team is strong, we would prefer to only focus on our team. We want to be champions but we will focus on the group stage first," Senamuang , who wants his side to not look at the past records, was quoted as saying by the tournament's official website.

On the other hand, Indonesia have had to play only four friendly matches since their Fifa suspension was revoked earlier this year. They clinched a 3-0 win against Malaysia in September but have not been able to do so against Vietnam and Myanmar.

While Senamuang conceded that his players were tired after Tuesday's game, Indonesia coach Alfred Riedl refused to buy his counterpart's argument and said his wards were aware of the threat.
