Overview
Pv SIndhu will take on He Bingjiao for a spot in the Women's singles semi-final of the 2016 China Open badminton at the Haixia Olympic Sport Center on Friday.
The Rio Olympic silver medallist survived a marathon 60-minute battle against United States shuttler Beiwen Zhang in the Round of 16 clash.
Sindhu conceded the first game to Zhang, who also reached the finals of French Open Superseries last month. However, the seventh seed was able to come back from behind and take a closely-fought second game 22-20.
Another hard-fought battle in the third game saw Sindhu holding her nerve and clinching the match 2-1. The celebrated shuttler from India has not had a good run since her silver medal-winning campaign in Rio de Janeiro earlier this year. She faced second-round exits in both Denmark and French Open Superseries in the ongoing season.
Sindhu would want to add a title to her collection to cap off what has been a remarkable year.
However, standing in her way is the 19-year-old Bingjiao, who is determined to lead the Chinese show at home in the absence of stalwarts Wang Yihan, Wang Shixian and Li Xuerui.
She brushed aside a challenge from Thailand shuttler Porntip Buranaprasertsuk in the previous round on Thursday.
Also, Bingjiao has slowly been making her presence felt at the top-tier badminton tournaments. The talented shuttler won her maiden Superseries title in Japan in September and has continued her good form by winning the French Open last month.
At the Bitburger Open earlier this month Bingjiao crushed her opponents enroute to win the title as she dropped only one game over five rounds.
Sindhu would have to be at her best to defeat an in-form Bingjiao who knocked her out of the French Open in the second round last month. The numbers are also stacked against the Indian shuttler as world number 10 has a good 4-2 head-to-head record.
