Overview
Carolina Marin takes on Tai Tzu Ying in the Women's singles quarter-final of the 2016 China Open badminton at the Haixa Olympic Sport Center on 18 November.
The Rio Olympic gold medallist just needed 33 minutes to dispose off her Round of 16 opponent Sayaka Sato in straight games. The Japanese shuttler hardly troubled Marin as the Spaniard took the match 21-13, 21-12.
The world number one has not been at her best since her successful Olympic campaign in August. She pulled out of the French Open tournament due to an injury before which she was beaten in the semi-final of the Denmark Open in October by Japanese teenager Akane Yamaguchi.
However, Marin has been seen at ease and has been dominant so far in the ongoing tournament. Before her clash against Sato, the 23-year-old made light work of local shuttler Ji Shutting in the opening round 21-18, 21-15.
Marin will be itching to clinch her maiden title in China and the absence of defending champion Li Xuerui gives the Spaniard a good chance to achieve glory.
On the other hand, Tzu Ying, who has faced mixed results in 2016, would want to make use of a good opportunity to topple the top-ranked shutter.
She outclassed unseeded Japanese shuttler Minatsu Mitano on Thursday in straight games to book her place in the last-eight round of the tournament.
Since her Olympic debacle which saw her exit the tournament with a straight games defeat to eventual silver medallist PV Sindhu, the Taiwanese shuttler has been consistent enough, reaching the final stages of the Superseries tournaments.
Notably, Marin faced a first round exit at the 2014 China Open after losing to Tzu Ying in straight sets. However, the Taiwanese shutler faces an uphill task this time, against the top-seed, who has the edge over her opponent with a 3-1 head-to-head record.
