Australia were bowled out for their lowest total at home in 32 years in the first innings of the Hobart Test against South Africa on Saturday.

The visiting team's skipper Faf du Plessis had no second thoughts about opting to field first on a grass-rich wicket at the Bellerive Oval. The South African pacers responded well to their captain's call by making use of the friendly conditions in the morning session.

Led by Vernon Philander, who picked up a five-for, the 10th of his career, the South African pace attack cleaned up Australia for just 85 runs. At one stage, Australia were reeling at 5/17 before going into the lunch break at 43/6.

Except Steve Smith, who made an unbeaten 48, and Joe Mennie, who added 10 runs to the total, nine other Australian batsmen were dismissed for single-digit scores, of which eight were less than five.

In the absence of bowling spearhead Dale Steyn, who was ruled out due to a shoulder injury, Kyle Abbott and Kagiso Rabada complemented Philander to complete the demolition act.

South Africa were comfortably placed at 43/0 at Tea in their reply to the home side's meagre total.

Australia's poor showing with the bat in the first innings might cost them the series as they lost the first of the three-match Test series at Perth by 177 runs after Rabada came up with a match-winning five-wicket haul in the final innings.
