Overview

Chelsea host Manchester United in the 2016/17 Premier League clash at the Stamford Bridge on 23 October.

United boss Jose Mourinho will hog all the limelight on Sunday as it will be his first visit to the Bridge following the end of his second spell as Chelsea manager in December 2015. The Portuguese tactician will be motivated to prove a point to his former club with a good showing.

Sunday's game will also be United's third in seven days after their 0-0 draw at Liverpool on Monday and their 4-1 crushing of Fenerbahce in Europa League on Thursday.

The Red Devils were benefited by Mourinho's organisation of the backline at Anfield, which made it difficult for Jurgen Klopp's side to take three full points at home.

Also, Paul Pogba, who has been facing criticism for his below par performances since he arrived at Old Trafford ahead of the season, netted a brace against Fenerbahce much to the relief of his boss and fans.

While reports indicate that skipper Wayne Rooney has not travelled with the team to London, defender Chris Smalling, who was replaced at halftime on Thursday with a minor injury, will be assessed ahead of the clash on Sunday.

On the other hand, Chelsea, who registered emphatic victories against Hull City and defending champions Leicester City in their last two league games, are placed two places above United at fifth.

Antonio Conte, whose side will be eyeing to breakthrough into the top-four, will be reminded of United's defensive approach at Anfield. Eden Hazard and Diego Costa will thus be crucial to the home side's chances on Monday.

While John Terry is available for selection, Cesc Fabregas and Branislav Ivanovic are out with injuries. Willian and Oscar, who suffered recent family bereavements, are also doubtful for the clash.
