Overview
PV Sindhu takes on Sato Sayaka in the second round of the 2016 Denmark Open at the Odense Sports Complex on 20 October.
Sindhu is fresh from her successful Rio Olympics campaign, in which she looked unstoppable until the gold medal match, where she was pipped by world number one Carolina Marin.
The rejuvenated approach in Sindhu's gameplay was visible in the first round of the ongoing tournament on Wednesday when she disposed of China's He Bingjiao in straight games.
Sindhu is seeded sixth in the Women's singles category behind Marin, Ratchanok Intanon, Nozomi Okuhara, Ji Hyun Sung and Tzu Ying Tai. However, given her recent form, she is likely to give a stiff fight to other tournament favourites.
Notably, SIndhu saw off challenges from Ying Tai and Okuhara in straight games at the 2016 Rio Olympics. Under the guidance of former All England Champion Pullela Gopichand, the 23-year-old has been playing a confident, aggressive game in the recent past.
Sindhu will take confidence from her last year's stint in Denmark, in which she crushed Marin in the semi-final only to fall short of the title in the final against Li Xuerui. Sindhu though reveals she is not worried about the pressure due to recent success but is hopeful of continuing her rise.
"Olympics has given me a lot of confidence and with the same confidence I hope I would go further. Responsibilities will always be high from now on. It's just that I shouldn't take much of pressure and play my game," Sindhu was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.
Japanese shuttler Sayaka will though not be a pushover by any means in the second round. The world number twelve showed steely resolve to make a comeback after losing the first game against Danish shuttler Natalia Koch Rohde in the first round.
Sayaka, who faced second round exits in both Japan and Korea Open in 2016, will be hoping to go one step further in Denmark by backing herself against a quality opponent on Thursday.
