Overview

Lee Chong Wei will take on HS Prannoy in the second round of 2016 Denmark Open at the Odense Sports Park on 20 October.

The world number one survived a scare against Hong Kong shuttler Wei Nan in the first round on Wednesday. After losing the first game by a comprehensive five-point margin, the Malaysian staged a strong comeback to make the progress.

Chong Wei was tested in the second game as well but he managed to hold on and win it 21-19 before brushing aside his opponent's challenge in the third game.

Beginning with Denmark, the top seed himself revealed he will play four Super Series tournaments in October and November 2016, in what will be a busy season for him. The 33-year-old hinted he wants to give his best to retain the number one spot in the badminton rankings.

In the absence of top-ranked Chinese shuttlers Lin Dan and Chen Long, who defeated the Malaysian in the Rio Olympics gold medal Men's singles match, Chong Wei will be primed for success in Denmark and a testing clash as early as in the first round would have helped him as well.

On Thursday, Chong Wei will take on unseeded Indian shuttler HS Prannoy. The 24-year-old defeated the top seed's compatriot Feng Chong Wei in his first round clash.

Prannoy took the first game 21-13 without breaking a sweat but dropped his second game 19-21. However, a tight third round, in which both the shuttlers were fighting hard for the lead, went in favour of the Indian.

Marred by injuries in 2015, Prannoy has been struggling in his comeback trail. He has faced first round defeats in five of the seven competitions he had participated in 2016.

Even with the experience of beating top stars of the likes of Lin Dan and Jan O Jorgensen, it is likely to be a tough ask for Prannoy to get past Chen Long, who is looking confident after his Japan Open and Rio Olympic success.
