Donald Trump, who often face backlash for his sexist and racist comments, landed in thick soup yet another time after he was heard bragging about groping and kissing women in a recording that recently came to light.

The Republican presidential candidate faced severe criticism from his own party on 7 October after a 2005 recording, in which he was seen talking with Billy Bush and boasting in vulgar terms about trying to have sex with an unidentified married woman, surfaced.

"When you're a star, they let you do it," he said in the video, Reuters reported.

Several leaders from the Republican Party denounced the remarks which were first published by the Washington Post.

Paul Ryan, House of Representatives Speaker and the top Republican elected official, said on Saturday that Trump will no longer attend a campaign event in Wisconsin with him. He said he was extremely "sickened" by the comments made by Trump.

"I hope Mr. Trump treats this situation with the seriousness it deserves and works to demonstrate to the country that he has greater respect for women than this clip suggests," Ryan said in a statement, according to Reuters.

Following the repercussions, Trump released a short video statement on Facebook on Friday apologising for his comment in the "more than a decade old video".

"I said it, I was wrong, and I apologize," he said.

However, according to the Washington Post, he tagged the incident as a "distraction from the issues we are facing today." Also, he said that his words were very much different than Bill Clinton's words, whom he accused of abusing women and his wife Hillary Clinton's, who according to him have "bullied, attacked, shamed and intimidated his victims."

"Bill Clinton has said far worse to me on the golf course -not even close. I apologise if anyone was offended," Trump said.

However, this is not the first time that Trump has said anything sexist. It is almost habitual for him to comment on women in vulgar terms.

Recently, he accused Hillary Clinton of not 'satisfying' her husband and then deleted the tweet.

While talking about his then wife Ivana, during an interview with the Vanity Fair in 1990, he said "I would never buy Ivana any decent jewels or pictures. Why give her negotiable assets?"

In another instance, Trump was quoted saying: "Women have one of the great acts of all time. The smart ones act very feminine and needy, but inside they are real killers. The person who came up with the expression 'the weaker sex' was either very naive or had to be kidding. I have seen women manipulate men with just a twitch of their eye — or perhaps another body part."

The incident might be detrimental to Trump as it happened just a month ahead of the presidential election which is scheduled for 8 November.
