Manchester City are concerned over the fitness of Vincent Kompany after their captain left the field during 2016/17 EFL Cup third round tie against Swansea City on 21 September.
City were comfortably placed at the Liberty Stadium after Gael Clichy and Aleix Garcia Serrano scored for them. However, Gylfi Sigurdsson gave the hosts a glimmer of hope by pulling one back in the stoppage time.
The visitors were left to fret soon after as Kompany came off on his own after Pep Guardiola had used all three substitutes. The Citizens though managed to hold on to the lead and earn their berth in the fourth round, in which they will take on Manchester United at Old Trafford.
Notably, Wednesday's game was the first Kompany had featured in since he suffered a thigh injury in last season's Uefa Champions League semi-final second leg against Real Madrid. The Belgian also opted out of his side's 2016 European Championship campaign after he underwent a surgery in May earlier this year.
Guardiola, however, hoped Kompany does not face another long term on the sidelines. After having started the ongoing season on a high winning nine straight games in all competitions, City, who are looking primed for league success, would want the experienced campaigner leading the back line.
"The doctors are speaking with him and seeing what's up. Hopefully, it will not be a big problem. We're going to wait for the results from the doctors," Guardiola was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.
Meanwhile, Clichy said he had spoken to Kompany after the game and that Wednesday's injury scare is unlikely to be a big setback to his captain.
"I don't think it's something big, I hope not. He told me he was OK and I hope he is because he has been out for a long time and this club needs their captain so hopefully it will be just a matter of days and he will be back soon," Clichy said, as quoted by the Manchester Evening News.
"I think when you've been out for a long time you have to be careful on your comeback."
