Overview

Al Quwa Al Jawiya host Al-Jaish in the quarter-final first leg of the 2016 AFC Cup at the Al Wakrah Sports Club in Doha on 13 September.

Al Quwa, also known as Air Force Club, have been impressive in their maiden AFC Cup competition in 2016. The Falcons began their tournament with wins against Group C opponents Al-Dharia (Palestine) and Al-Orouba (Oman) before losing 5-2 to Al Wahda (Syria). However, in the home leg the Iraqi side avenged their loss against Wahda beating them 1-0.

Air Force Club finished on top of the Group C standings and made it to the Round of 16, in which they faced Jordanian champions Al Wehdat, who were making their ninth appearance at the AFC Cup, according to the tournament's official website.

Goals from Mohammad Hasan and Hamadi Ahmad gave the hosts an early two-goal advantage. Al Wehdat pulled a goal back in the dying minutes of the first half but never were able to pose any challenge in the second half.

Syrian side Jaish won only three of their six games in the qualification round but managed to finish second in Group D behind Al-Muharraq (Bahrain). The 2004 champions scored only five goals in their group stages and were pitted against Iraqi champions Naft Al-Wasat in the Round of 16 clash.

However, a 78th-minute goal from striker Mohammad Hamdoko sealed a quarter-final berth for Jaish.

While Air Force Club would want to extend their dream run, Jaish, who are the only Syrian side remaining in the tournament, will look to peak during the business end.
