A 6.8 magnitude earthquake struck off the town of Rabaul in Papua New Guinea on Wednesday morning, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said.

USGS said the epicentre of the quake was located 89 km north-east of Rabaul on New Britain island at a depth of 499km.

There were no reports of immediate injury or damage.
