Singapore's Joseph Schooling failed to qualify for the 100m freestyle final after clocking 48.7 seconds in the semi-final on Tuesday night at the Rio Olympics.
Schooling finished 8th in his semi-final but according to his time, he was placed 16th overall in the men's 100m freestyle event. Only the top eight swimmers qualify to the final, which will be held on Wednesday night in Rio.
The 21-year-old Schooling said that he will now turn his focus on his 100m butterfly heats.
"I thought it was going a lot faster but I just couldn't get into the race. It's my third best time so I can't be mad at it," Schooling told Channel NewsAsia.
Schooling added: "It's just a warm up for the 100 fly, that's what I'm focusing on. I feel fine. It's hard. I've never raced at 10pm at night, it's not an excuse but I think this is a good learning curve to set me up for Thursday and hopefully Friday."
Schooling would have been the first Singaporean male to make it to the Olympics swimming final if he had progressed.
