United States senator from Virginia, Tim Kaine, has been nominated by Hillary Clinton as her running mate Friday night for the upcoming US elections.
The presumptive Democratic nominee, in a text message to supporters said, "I'm thrilled to tell you this first: I've chosen Sen. Tim Kaine as my running mate."
In response to this major political decision Kaine himself tweeted, "I'm honored to be her running mate." The two will make their first appearance together as a ticket Saturday at a rally in Miami.
In 2008 Kaine was considered as a possible running mate for Barack Obama, but was not selected. Obama ultimately selected Biden to become the vice-presidential nominee.
Tim Kaine is indeed a popular face in Virginia politics. The Harvard Law School graduate was elected to the Senate in 2012. Before that he served as the mayor of Richmond and the governor of Virginia.
According to a Democratic source, Kaine, 58, edged out two other finalists – Cory Booker, a US senator from New Jersey, and Agriculture Secretary Tom Vilsack.
The Trump campaign called Kaine "an ethically challenged insider" and called Clinton and Kaine a "Status Quo" ticket. "If you think Crooked Hillary and Corrupt Kaine are going to change anything in Washington, it's just the opposite," campaign aide Jason Miller said in a statement.
The United States presidential election of 2016 is scheduled to occur on Tuesday, November 8, 2016.
