A 5.0 magnitude earthquake struck eastern Japan on Sunday, Japan's Meteorological Agency and the US Geological Survey (USGS) said.
The USGS said the epicentre of the quake was 44 km (27 miles) northwest of Tokyo at a depth of about 44 km. The quake rattled buildings in Tokyo but there were no immediate reports of damage.
Japan's national broadcasting organisation NHK reported that the Tokai No. 2 nuclear power station was checked for damage after the quake, but no such damage was found there.
