Two middle-aged women were arrested in Singapore on Thursday for allegedly selling counterfeit luxury goods at Far East Plaza. The police seized more than 900 products, including counterfeit Hermes bags and fake Louboutin, Valentino and Yves Saint Laurent shoes.
The police said on Friday the officers held simultaneous raids at five retail shops in a shopping mall along Scotts Road and arrested the women. The authorities added that the 900 trademark-infringing items, which were seized, include footwear, clothing, bags, watches, pouches, wallets, belts, scarfs and labels. The products had an estimated street value of S$200,000.
The police said the investigations are ongoing. If convicted of selling or distributing goods with falsely applied trademarks, the two women could face up to five years of jail along with a fine of up to S$100,000, or both.
In recent years, Singapore has been keeping a close watch on the sale of counterfeit products be it food, electronics or luxury products. On Tuesday, Singapore food authorities said that no Chinese fake food products were detected in the country, after scores of Chinese factories were busted for making counterfeit branded food products.
According to Chinese media reports, almost 50 factories were found to have manufactured the counterfeit food products in the Chinese city of Tianjin. The Beijing News reported that the products were packed with fake labels of popular brands like Lee Kum Kee, Nestle and Knorr.
