Manchester United have confirmed their star midfielder Michael Carrick has signed a one-year contract extension on Thursday.
The England international was out of contract as his earlier contract was set to expire after the end of this month. His future at Old Trafford was uncertain due to the managerial situation at the club.
Louis van Gaal was allowed to leave the Red Devils and was replaced by Jose Mourinho. The Portuguese tactician has decided to keep the 34-year-old at the club by handing him a new contract.
Australian outfit Perth Glory were interested in signing Carrick. But their CEO Peter FilopoulosHowever, earlier confirmed the midfielder has agreed to sign an extension. United confirmed it today.
"Manchester United is delighted to announce that Michael Carrick has agreed terms to extend his contract for a further year to June 2017," a statement read on United's official website.
Carrick has expressed his delight after United handing him a new deal. This will now give him an opportunity to play under the former Chelsea manager at Old Trafford.
"This great club has been a part of my life for the past 10 years, so I am delighted that this incredible journey is continuing," Carrick explained.
"It's great to have the opportunity to work under José Mourinho, who has achieved so much during his managerial career. I would like to thank the fans for their unwavering support. Winning the FA Cup was a special moment and, hopefully, we can go on to win more trophies in the future."
Mourinho explained why United decided in handing the former Tottenham Hotspur midfileder a new deal.
"Michael is a very intelligent midfielder and a great reader of the game. I am pleased that he will be extending his contract. His form this year shows his ability and his enjoyment of the game are as strong as ever," United manager said.
"Michael has a wealth of experience from his many years at the club and that knowledge will be invaluable to me. I am really looking forward to working with him."
