A Singapore-registered container ship was hijacked off the Nigerian Coast late Friday night but authorities quickly gained control over the vessel.

Nigerian authorities said all 25 crew members on board the ship Safmarine Kuramo are safe, Today Online reported.

The vessel, managed by Maersk Line, was travelling from Pointe Noire, Congo, to Port Onne, Nigeria.

Singapore's' Maritime and Port Authority (MPA) received the hijack alert late night on Friday. Five hours later the Nigerian officials secured the ship and freed all the crew.

No Singaporean was in the ship, it was reported. Most of the crew members were from the Philippines, South Africa, India, United Kingdom and Thailand.
