Garbine Muguruza wins first Wimbledon title after second-set collapse from Venus Williams

Petra Kvitova registered a victory over Garbine Muguruza in the fourth round of the 2017 US Open at Arthur Ashe Stadium on 4 September.

The 2017 Wimbledon champion took a 4-1 lead in the first set. However, Czech Republic star made a comeback and won the set on tie breaker. She dominated the second set and sealed the match by 6-3.

Kvitova will take on Venus Williams in the quarter-final clash of the fourth Grand Slam event of the calendar year. She faced a career threatening situation in December 2015 when an intruder attacked her with a knife at her residence in the Czech Republic and was forced to undergo a surgery.

Her return to the court were uncertain as she sustained a grave injury. But Kvitova came back in May and played at Roland-Gaross.

Earlier in this tournament, the 27-year-old had defeated two French players Alizé Cornet, Caroline Garcia and the Serbian Jelena Janković. Kvitova also played in Birmingham, Wimbledon, Stanford, Canadian Masters, Cincinnati Masters and New Haven.

"Sometimes I just really feel that the touch is there - the strength, the aggressive kind of game plan," Kvitova was quoted as saying by BBC.

"It's there, which I really, really appreciate. It took me a while to find it. Luckily I found it in a Grand Slam, which is nice. It will be a great match for me to step on Arthur Ashe Stadium again - probably - and play there. Venus has something special which the other players don't have," she further added.

Kvitova's current world ranking is 14. But if she wants to fix her position in the list of top 10 then she would have to beat ninth rank Williams in the last eight of the tournament.

On the other hand, Muguruza to world rank 3 after her Wimbledon victory. She won her previous matches in New York against the 64 ranked Varvara Lepchenko, the Chinese player Duan Yingying and the Slovakian Magdalena Rybarikova.

"Even though I was winning 4-1, I think she was playing great," Muguruza said, as quoted by the BBC.

"I felt like she was superior today. You know great for her. She played very good."
