Malaysian narcotics police have arrested an upcoming teenage actress in connection with a drug haul involving over 30 kg of ganja.
The contraband worth several hundred thousand ringgit was seized by the anti-narcotics police team about 10 days ago. The arrest of the actress, who stars in a soon-to-be released local drama serial, followed the drug haul.
Three others were also arrested in Damansara and the local reports say a relative of a minister's aide is one of the kingpins behind the drug trade.
The teenage actress, who is said to be a college student, was held along with a 22-year-old man who is believed to be her boyfriend. They were arrested in raid at a condominium unit by the police late on 19 April. Two other boys, aged 19 and 20, were also present there at the time of the raid. Both of them are college mates of the actress.
Local media reported that initial round of investigations revealed that the drug ring allegedly was led by the oldest among the suspects. He used to supply the ganja to the college students.
In an interview with the Malaysia Chronicle, Petaling Jaya police chief ACP Mohd Zaini Che Din confirmed the arrests and said that the suspects were under a remand order for investigations. When asked more about the case, he declined to comment any further in this case.
The case has been classified under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act which carries the death sentence upon conviction.
The actress, who was about to make her debut in the entertainment industry, is expected to miss the launch of the drama next month.
According to the Sun, the main suspect of the drug ring is a close relative of a political aide of a minister.
